How to Handle a Burst Pipe in an NYC Apartment or Home

If a pipe bursts in your NYC apartment or home, shut off the water at the nearest valve or the building main, cut power to wet areas, notify building management immediately (a riser failure can flood units below), move valuables, and call a 24/7 restoration company to extract water and start drying. Why burst pipes are common in NYC
Much of Brooklyn, Manhattan, and Queens housing is pre-war construction with aging galvanized and cast-iron supply lines and radiator piping. Freezing weather, old risers, failed radiator valves, and high building pressure all contribute. A single riser failure can affect several units in minutes.
Stop the water and the power
Shut off the apartment or building main water valve. If water is near outlets or the panel, cut power to the affected area at the breaker. Do not touch electrical devices while standing in water.
Notify building management
In co-ops, condos, and rentals, the building needs to isolate the riser and check units below. Document which unit the leak started in — liability and insurance often hinge on the source.
