How to Prevent Mold After Water Damage
Updated 2026-06-17 · Shield Water Damage Restoration
To prevent mold after water damage, you must dry the structure within 24 to 72 hours: extract all standing water, remove saturated porous materials that cannot be saved, open wet cavities so they can dry, run commercial dehumidifiers and air movers continuously, and verify with a moisture meter that materials are dry before stopping. Mold can begin to grow within 24 to 48 hours on wet, porous materials, so speed and moisture verification — not just looking dry — are what actually prevents it.
The 24-to-72-hour window
Mold spores are everywhere; they need moisture, a food source (paper, wood, drywall), and time. The industry target is to get materials to a dry standard within 3 to 5 days, with active drying started within the first 24 hours.
Remove what cannot dry in time
Saturated carpet padding, wet insulation, and delaminated materials often cannot be saved and should be removed so the structure behind them can dry. Cutting access holes in drywall to vent wet wall cavities is standard practice.
Use the right drying equipment
House fans and a single dehumidifier are not enough for a real loss. Shield uses commercial air movers, low-grain refrigerant and desiccant dehumidifiers, and HEPA air scrubbers, and we balance them to the room and materials.
Verify with moisture meters, not your eyes
A surface can look dry while the subfloor or wall cavity is still wet. We take moisture readings in multiple materials daily and do not remove equipment until the structure meets drying standards.
